The price you pay for Xfinity internet is close to the advertised promotional price, but taxes and fees may be added to the total in some locations. After 12 to 36 months, your price could revert to standard pricing and your final bill could increase by $20 to $55 per month.

In addition, some Xfinity plans in the West and Northwest require contracts, so you could be charged if you cancel early. You could also be charged extra if you exceed monthly data limits.

Let’s get into it.

Your first Xfinity internet bill

Your first Xfinity bill will be higher than your monthly bills going forward. The main reason is prorated fees: You’re charged starting the day of activation, plus the first full month of service. For example, if you start on July 20, your August bill will include the service fee for August plus the last 11 days of July.

You could also see activation or installation charges on your first bill, depending on where you live and when you sign up. The only way to know if these apply to you is to carefully read your broadband nutrition label and any other disclosures you find during the checkout process.

Your monthly Xfinity bill

Monthly bills from Xfinity are less straightforward than what you’ll see with some fiber providers, like Verizon Fios, and some 5G home internet providers, like T-Mobile 5G Home Internet.

Every Xfinity bill is slightly different, but here’s what you might see:

  • Promotional discounts: For the first one to three years of service, you may get a discount on your internet service in the range of $20 to $55 per month. This shows up as a subtraction from the standard price, which is listed on the top line.
  • Autopay discounts: Your top line price could be reduced by $5 or $10 per month if you sign up for autopay. This appears as a subtraction from the top-line price.
  • Regulatory cost recovery and FCC fees: The FCC charges Xfinity fees for fund administration and low-income accessibility programs, and Xfinity passes these costs on to customers. You may see these as a line item.
  • Franchise fees: Local governments require these of Xfinity, and the company passes the cost on to customers. These may also be a line item.
  • State and local taxes: These may be required by your municipality and are added as a line item.
  • Data overage fees: If you exceed your data cap of 1.2TB, you’ll be charged $10 for every additional 50GB. The first time you go over your cap, though, you’ll just get a warning.

Optional fees show up under the monthly total in a box called “Add ons.” They may include:

  • Fees for other apps: If you signed up for a service such as Netflix or Peaco*ck through Xfinity, you could see the charge as a line item on your bill.
  • Fees for equipment rental: If you use Xfinity’s internet gateway or streaming box, you may be charged monthly. You can get out of this cost on certain promotions or by using your own equipment.
  • Unlimited data fee: It’s possible to pay $30 extra to remove the 1.2TB data cap.

Recent Xfinity rate changes

Many Xfinity customers are on promotions, so they don’t get charged standard rates. If you’ve been a customer for a while, though, you might be stuck with standard rates.

The last standard rate increase was in 2023, and we also saw price hikes every year in the four years before that. There are no price locks with Xfinity, so these rates could go up any time.

It’s also worth noting that bundle pricing may make it hard to know how much you’re paying for internet service. This explainer from Xfinity may help, or you can get help through your mobile app or by visiting the support site and starting a conversation with an Xfinity chat bot.

How Xfinity compares

Xfinity has great prices for fast, reliable service. But it may not be right for everyone. You could get more reliable service from a fiber provider, for example, or score cheaper bundles by pairing 5G home internet service with mobile phone service from the same provider.

FAQ about Xfinity billing

Why is Xfinity charging me so much?

Xfinity charges fees and taxes on top of advertised rates, so your bill may be higher than you expect. Some of these fees, such as internet equipment rental charges, are optional. Others aren’t.

If you’re an Xfinity TV customer, for example, you will see charges for broadcast channels and certain sports channels (even if you don’t watch them).

If your Xfinity bill has recently jumped, it might be because your promotion period has ended. Billing errors are common too. The first step is to check your bill. Then, contact customer service to correct the error or negotiate a new promo price.

How much does Xfinity internet cost by itself?

In August of 2024, monthly promotional prices for Xfinity internet ranged from $19.99 for 150Mbps of download speed all the way up to $95 for 1,200Mbps (not counting equipment rental). These prices jump in the range of $10 to $55 per month once your promo runs out, and the specific plans available to you depend on where you live.

On top of service charges and equipment lease fees, Xfinity may add local taxes and fees. Read your broadband nutrition label during checkout to see which fees and charges apply.

Does Xfinity raise prices on home internet?

Yes, Xfinity hikes prices on internet service, and it does it in two ways. First, it signs new customers up for promotional discounts that end after one to three years of service. Your bill could go up by $20 or more once the promo ends. Second, Xfinity increases standard prices about once a year. These price hikes are usually only for a few dollars at a time but can add up if you bundle internet with voice, TV, and mobile.

What charges appear on my Xfinity internet bill?

Your Xfinity internet bill starts off with the service charge, and you’ll see line-item discounts for promotions and signing up for autopay. Other line items may include mandatory taxes and fees. At the bottom of that box, you’ll see your total monthly service charge.

In a separate “Add ons” box, you’ll see charges for equipment rental, data overages, and any additional streaming services you have ordered through Xfinity. Your final bill is the total from both boxes.
