Critics Consensus

The Longest Ride is less manipulative than the average Nicholas Sparks film, but it's still saccharine and hopelessly contrived -- not that it'll matter to the target audience.

The Longest Ride | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Alex Abad-Santos Vox Unfortunately, Chaplin's brilliance, Alda's funny crustiness, and Eastwood's vulnerability aren't enough to keep this film afloat. Rated: 2/5 Dec 17, 2015 Full Review The Longest Ride | Rotten Tomatoes (2) Alison Willmore BuzzFeed News The Longest Ride is a weak sauce addition to the Sparks empire, a little better than last year's The Best of Me, but miles below uber-Sparks work The Notebook. Nov 10, 2015 Full Review The Longest Ride | Rotten Tomatoes (3) Mark Kermode Observer (UK) Like all of Sparks's stories it's corny as hell, but there's an unabashed, old-fashioned charm that gradually warms the cockles and moistens the eye. Audience Member I've seen so many negative views about this film, with critics saying the film tried to connect two completely different love stories, staring actors who did not give there best, and overall the movie being too long.Well I disagree completely. This is by far one of my new favourite films. I loved how it included two love stories, and they were connected!! Both sets of couples had to make a choice whether to sacrifice their dreams to create a new dream, and live new lives with the person they love. The film wasn't too long bc the story was a journey. I hate it when it feels like the couples in romcoms have hardly known each other. This film is realistic because it shows the trials they go through, both Ira and Ruth, and Sophia and Luke.My heart was so invested in this film, I cried through their trials, and was so giddy by the end.Highly recommend, a must watch!! Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/27/24 Full Review Sarah W I like the contrast between the past and the present in this movie. It's overall a really decent chick flick. Rated 3.5/5 Stars • Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/01/24 Full Review Bill R Excellent! Love story with great acting by Scott Eastwood and Britt Robinson, not to forget Alan alda! Rated 3.5/5 Stars • Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/08/24 Full Review Yash B "The Longest Ride" is a strange mashup of two storylines that feel like two completely different movies. It seems there is an attempt to connect the two and find parallels, but to me, it just felt kind of boring because I was never really invested in either storyline. There are some sweet and romantic moments, but not enough for me to care about anyone in the movie if I am being honest. I think the movie is shot and put together pretty well, and the performances are fine, I just didn't get into it. Overall, to me, this is one of the less engaging Nicholas Sparks movies and I really never got into it or got truly emotionally invested. It's definitely worth the watch. Rated 4/5 Stars • Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/18/24 Full Review Read all reviews
