Our take on Cox internet plans
Compared to other major providers, Cox is about average all around. It has a wide range of speeds, and you’ll pay a standard price for them, with no significant promotions or discounts. Cox’s lowest performing category, value, received a lower score due to its $20-$34/mo. price increase after 12-24 months.
Cox scores a little higher in the performance and customer satisfaction categories, however, due to its fast speed plan options and its use of coaxial cable technology, which is known for being one of the more reliable internet service types.

How we calculated our rating
What we like
-
Plan options for everyone – Cox speed tiers range from 100 to 1000 Mbps, so there’s a plan for virtually every need.
-
Panoramic Wi-Fi – A powerful easy-to-use modem/router combo is included free for 24 months on most plans.
-
Easy termination – Cox makes it easy to end service with no annual contract or cancellation fees.
Things to consider
-
Data caps– It will take a lot of internet use to go over the 1.25TB/mo. data cap, but doing so could add $10 to your bill for every 50GB you go over, up to $50.
-
Price increases – After 12-24 months of service, Cox will increase plans by $20/mo. – $34/mo.
Our methodology
We evaluate broadband providers in four categories: affordability, performance, value and customer satisfaction. Each category contains multiple sub-factors, all of which are weighted differently to impact the provider’s overall score.
We evaluate broadband providers in four categories: affordability, performance, value and customer satisfaction. Each category contains multiple sub-factors, all of which are weighted differently to impact the provider’s overall score.
For each sub-factor, we score all providers on a continuous scale of 1 to 5, relative to the industry as a whole. Because the average download speed in America is currently 180 Mbps, for example, we assigned all plans with download speeds between 100 and 299 Mbps a score between 3 and 4. Xfinity’s 200 Mbps plan received a 3.50 score for download speed, while Spectrum’s 400 Mbps plan got a 4.16.
We only considered standardized data points in our scoring system. More abstract data like consistency of service and brand reputation is still part of our analysis, but we opted to let our writers address them in the context of each review.

Cox Communications internet fees
Installation fee: Free
One perk of choosing Cox internet is that you don’t have to pay an installation fee. Installation fees can cost up to $150 so this is a great way to keep your first internet bill a little lower.
Overage fee: $10/mo. for every 50GB exceeded
A small downside of Cox internet is that there are data caps imposed on most Cox plans. However, a data cap of 1.25TB/mo. is difficult to exceed so don’t worry too much about this fee.

Cox has a hard time competing with AT&T Fiber and Verizon Fios when it comes to pricing and upload speeds. If you are looking for the best value, therefore, only choose Cox if you live in an area where fiber optic internet providers are not available. If you are simply looking for the cheapest high-speed internet option available, however, Cox is one of the better options.
